Motocross can be an expensive sport, and one of the most important investments riders make is in their boots. In this blog, we will be diving deep into two of the most popular motocross boots on the market: the Alpinestars Tech 10 and the Fox Racing Instinct. At MX Locker, we understand the need for expert advice when it comes to purchasing riding gear, which is why we are introducing a new series where professionals like me can provide recommendations on the products you're looking for.

The Importance of Motocross Boots

Motocross boots are not only expensive, but they are also crucial for rider safety and performance. As one of the most popular categories on MX Locker, it's essential to choose the right boots for your needs. The Fox Racing Instinct has been a favorite among riders for over a decade, and I have personally worn them for years. However, I just tested the Fox Instinct versus the Alpinestars Tech 10 to provide an honest opinion on both boots.

Initial Impressions

Starting with the newest version of the Fox Instinct, I noticed that the boot feels bigger compared to the previous version. The toe area is more spacious, almost like it's a size bigger. As someone who wears a size nine, this was surprising. The buckles on the new Instinct feel solid, and the boot is comfortable to ride with straight away, thanks to the hinge system in the ankle area. However, the size issue in the toe area might be corrected by trying a different size. Moving on to the Alpinestars Tech 10, I found that this boot also feels a little big, despite being my true size. The toe box area feels snug, and the ankle area feels tight. The boot feels stiffer, and there is resistance when trying to flex the foot. It's worth noting that the Tech 10 uses a three-buckle system, and the buckles are reversed compared to the Instinct.

On the Bike: New Boots

After riding with the newest Fox Instinct for the first time, I didn't feel the need for any break-in time. The boot provided a good fit overall, although I experienced some movement in the front of my foot due to the size issue. However, the traction on the foot pegs was positive and shifting was smooth. The boot felt comfortable and performed well during the ride. Switching to the Alpinestars Tech 10, I immediately noticed the rigidity and structure of the boot. The boot limits flexion, which affected my use of the rear brake. I had to lift my heel off the peg to use the rear brake effectively. The Tech 10 felt more rigid compared to the new Instinct, but it still provided good quality and traction on the foot pegs.

On the Bike: Used Boots

Next, I tried a pair of used Tech 10 boots with 10+ hours of wear. These boots felt broken in and provided more flexion in the ankle area compared to the new Tech 10s. The boots felt softer around the front of the ankle, allowing for better movement and flexibility. They performed well during the ride, and I felt lighter due to the increased ankle movement. Finally, I switched to a pair of used Fox Instinct boots. These boots provided the flexibility I was used to, allowing for more ankle movement and a familiar feel. The difference in flexion between the Tech 10 and the Instinct was notable, and it affected my riding style.

Final Thoughts

Both the Alpinestars Tech 10 and the Fox Instinct performed well during the tests. However, personal preference and familiarity played a significant role in my decision. As someone who has been wearing the Fox Instinct for a long time, I preferred the flexion it offered. The Tech 10 would require some adjustment and breaking in to get used to the reduced flexion. Riders like Eli Tomac have had great success with the Tech 10, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference. In terms of weight, the Fox Instinct weighs 8.4 lb, while the Alpinestars Tech 10 weighs 8.8 lb. The price difference is also significant, with the Fox Instinct priced at $559 and the Tech 10 priced at $679. In conclusion, both the Alpinestars Tech 10 and the Fox Instinct are excellent motocross boots. It is crucial to find the boot that suits your preferences and provides the necessary safety and performance features.
