When it comes to motocross gear, boots are one of the most critical pieces of equipment for both performance and protection. Recently, I had the chance to put the Gaerne SG22 boots to the test at Fox Raceway, and I want to share my honest first impressions of this highly popular, premium Italian-made motocross boot. Designed for riders who demand durability, comfort, and a pro-level feel, the SG22 is Gaerne’s latest evolution of their iconic SG series.
The Gaerne SG22 boots feature a conventional buckle system that’s straightforward and quick to adjust, even on the fly. I was working with a size 43 European, which translates to a US 9. Initially, the size felt a bit too big for me, so I added a street sock over my usual thin motocross sock to fill out the footbed and achieve a snug fit.
Adding the extra sock made a noticeable difference. The buckles were easy to tighten, allowing me to get the boots perfectly strapped in no time. This adjustability is a big plus, as it lets you dial in the fit depending on the type of ride or your personal comfort level.
One standout feature of the SG22 is its traditional construction method. Unlike many other motocross boots on the market that use glued soles, the Gaerne SG22 boots have their soles stitched on the outside. This might seem like a small detail, but it’s an important one for durability and longevity. A stitched sole tends to hold up better over time, making these boots a smart investment if you’re looking for something built to last.
The hinge system on the SG22 impressed me immediately. Right out of the box, the boots felt like they had excellent flexion, providing a good range of ankle movement without sacrificing support.
At first, I was a bit skeptical about the ankle flexion and extension, especially when it comes to pushing the rear brake—a critical movement in motocross riding. The traditional build made me wonder if the boot would restrict movement too much.
However, after just a few laps, I adapted quickly. The ankle box felt tight and supportive, giving me confidence without feeling overly restrictive. While the ankle movement isn’t as free as some boots I’m used to, the comfort and protection balance was excellent. I didn’t mind the firmer feel at all.
One of the most impressive aspects of the SG22 is the sole design. Whatever Gaerne has done with the sole construction gives you a fantastic feel for the ground and the bike’s position on the pavement. This kind of feedback is crucial for precise control during aggressive riding.
You really know exactly where your foot is on the bike, which can enhance your overall riding experience and confidence at speed.
The Gaerne SG22 boots are a compelling choice for riders who want a durable, comfortable, and performance-oriented motocross boot. The traditional stitched sole construction, easy-to-use buckle system, and excellent ankle support combine to create a boot that feels premium and race-ready.
While the ankle movement is firmer than some other boots, the quick adaptation and overall feel on the track make the SG22 a standout option. If you value durability and precise ground feel, these boots deserve a serious look.
For riders looking to upgrade their gear or find a boot with a pro-level feel, the Gaerne SG22 could very well be the best boot in the game.
Stay tuned for more detailed reviews and riding insights as I continue to put these boots through their paces.
