In the 1970's, the Trans-AMA motocross series was where the world champions from Europe would race the Americans, on our tracks, and showed us how to go fast. One of the races was held on November 20th in Puyallup, Washington. The track was notorious for being sandy and full of rocks. In 1977, rivals Bob Hannah (#2) and world champion Roger DeCoster (#104) locked into a pitched battle for both 45-minute motos (heats). DeCoster held off Hannah each time. In the second moto, the wet, heavy sand and rocks broke off Hannah's front fender. Without a front fender the sand flying up from his front tire impaired his visibility and he was not able to get around DeCoster. After the race, I walked to the Yamaha pits to see Hannah's works bike. I noted the missing front fender and saw that the front number plate had also been broken by the flying rocks. I, being a kid, asked Hannah's mechanic, Keith McCarty, how he was going to fix the broken plate. He unhooked the two rubber straps holding it on and handed it to me and said, "We'll just put on a new one, do you want this?". After having it for the last 48 years, it is time for another motocross enthusiast to enjoy it. The Cycle News article about this race is included in the photos.
