Tell us a little bit about yourself, are you into the sport yourself, how did you start Bootlegger Moto Supply, where did you see an opportunity for new or slightly used motocross gear?
I rode dirt bikes recreationally from an early age and started racing around 15 years old. Once I started racing and riding competitively, I always wanted to have a gear setup just like the top pros (Alpinestars Tech 10’s, Shoei VFX-W helmet, etc.). I quickly came to realize that a $600 pair of Tech 10 boots was out of my budget at the time, even though I worked a part-time job after school each day. Luckily, I worked at a dealership and my boss sold me a pair of closeout Alpinestars Tech 10 boots at cost.
However, being around the scene, I knew others just like me wanted premium quality gear, but couldn’t justify the cost. This is the basis of how Bootlegger Moto Supply started.
Personally, I’m very active in the sport. l ride and race at tracks all over the Midwest with my favorite being RedBud Mx. During riding season, I try to make it somewhere once a week. For me, I just like to keep riding fun and enjoy the days I get to spend at the track.
What strategies have brought you success to Bootlegger Moto Supply in selling motocross products online?
I believe one of the most important aspects for becoming a successful seller online is to think in terms of the customer and the customer experience. Put yourself in their shoes, and see what “barriers” a consumer might have. The better you are at making your listings consumer friendly, the more success you will have. For example, does your ad have clear pictures and provide all angles of the product? Does the text copy provide a detailed description? ETC.
Favorite things about doing what you do. Being in a sport you love and also having a business around it?
One of my favorite things about Bootlegger Moto Supply and working in the industry is being able to help others get the most value for their hard-earned dollar. Our goal has always been to help others gain access to premium level gear at a mid-level price point. Hands down, the best part is being able to give back to riders in the moto community. On several occasions, we have supported riders in need of help which is a very gratifying experience to know that we are making a positive difference.
I’ve also enjoyed all of the connections I’ve been able to make and customers I’ve been able to meet over the years. It’s pretty cool to pull up to a track in the middle of nowhere and be recognized by customers.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to make the most of the marketplace MX Locker provides?
If you want to make the most of your experience on Mx Locker’s marketplace, I’d recommend taking your time when creating listings. Take clear pictures and write a detailed description. The more information, the better experience a consumer will have. Once you have sold an item, be sure to use Mx Locker’s shipping feature to get the best shipping rates.
