When it comes to motocross helmets, the right fit and comfort can make all the difference in your riding experience. Today, I'm diving into the Alpinestars Supertech M10 (SM10) helmet. This helmet is designed with pro-level performance in mind, featuring a multi-composite shell, MIPS rotational impact protection, and optimized ventilation. Let's take a closer look at what makes the SM10 stand out.
Trying on the Alpinestars SM10 for the first time was a pleasant experience. The fit around the crown of my head felt really good, with snug cheek pads wrapping comfortably around the bottom of my ears. This design not only enhances comfort but also provides decent sound dampening, minimizing external noise distractions while riding.
One of the first things I noticed was how light the helmet felt on my head. Comfort is crucial, especially during long rides, and the SM10 doesn’t disappoint. The wide eye port is another fantastic feature, allowing for a clear line of sight. I decided to put on some goggles to see how they fit with the helmet.
The goggles fit snugly, which I really appreciated. It’s essential for the goggles to sit tightly to avoid any distractions while riding. Overall, the SM10 provided a snug yet comfortable fit, perfect for my head size.
With the helmet securely in place, it was time to hit the track. The SM10 felt stable on my head throughout the ride. However, I did encounter a slight issue with the goggles fitting back into the helmet. On some helmets, my head tends to fit back into the eye port, but this helmet posed a bit of a challenge.
Another point to note was the cheek pads. While they provided a good fit, they pressed a bit too hard against the backside of my ears, making me wish for a little more room. I found myself wanting my head to be positioned a bit further forward inside the helmet.
One interesting design aspect of the Alpinestars SM10 is the minimal gap around the edge of the helmet. I could see the edge clearly, but it didn't seem to affect my overall view. In fact, this feature could be beneficial in keeping roost and debris out of my face during rides.
Having a helmet that minimizes the risk of roost getting into your face is essential for any serious rider. This design consideration is something that sets the SM10 apart from many other helmets on the market.
The SM10 is designed for serious riders, but how does it stack up against other helmets? Let's explore some of its competitors in the market.
The Bell Moto 10 is known for its comfort and has garnered a strong reputation among pro riders. While it feels a bit looser around the cheek pads, it maintains a snug overall fit. Its standout feature is the magnetic cheek pads, making maintenance a breeze. However, it's worth noting that it might be one of the louder helmets, which could be distracting.
The Fly Racing Formula Rheon is gaining popularity for its cushioning and airflow. The helmet feels spacious and provides excellent visibility. It features unique safety technology that absorbs rotational impacts, enhancing rider protection. The snug fit around the ears ensures stability without feeling overly tight.
The FOX V3 RS is celebrated for its lightweight design and roomy fit. It provides a snug fit around the crown, essential for comfort. The wide eye port allows for easy goggle fitment, ensuring a good range of vision without obstruction.
The Shoei VFX-EVO stands out with its aggressive shell design, holding the goggle strap securely in place. The snug fit around the chin and cheek areas enhances comfort. However, some riders may find the eye port area lower than expected, affecting goggle placement.
The 6D ATR2 is recognized for its advanced safety technology. It provides a unique design prioritizing airflow, although it may have less noise dampening than others. The visibility is commendable, making it a great choice for those focused on innovative safety features.
Choosing the right motocross helmet is deeply personal, influenced by individual fit, comfort, and safety preferences. The Alpinestars SM10 offers a mix of features that cater to serious riders. While it has its quirks, like the snugness around the ears, its lightweight feel and effective design make it a solid contender in the motocross helmet market.
When selecting a helmet, it's crucial to try them on for the best fit. Safety and comfort go hand in hand, and investing in a quality helmet like the Alpinestars SM10 can significantly enhance your riding experience.
