Motocross has always been a sport where riders accept a certain amount of risk. But what if your gear could detect a crash before you even hit the ground — and inflate a protective airbag around your torso in milliseconds?
That's exactly what Alpinestars is offering with the new Tech-Air MX Airbag System, and MX Locker's Jeff Emig recently sat down with Alpinestars specialist Brent Jaswinski to get a full breakdown of how it works, who it's for, and whether it's actually worth wearing on the track.
The Alpinestars Tech-Air MX is an airbag system built directly into a chest protector. Unlike road and off-road airbag systems you may have seen on adventure or racing motorcycles, this one is designed specifically for the demands of motocross — where crashes are sudden, violent, and unpredictable.
The system uses onboard sensors and proprietary algorithms to detect crash situations in real time. When a crash is detected, the airbag deploys around the rider's chest and back, absorbing and distributing impact forces that would otherwise be taken entirely by the body.
This is where things get interesting. The Tech-Air MX relies on four distinct algorithms working simultaneously to analyze rider movement and identify crash patterns. The sensors are constantly reading data — acceleration, orientation, motion — and comparing it against what normal riding looks like.
When the numbers deviate far enough from "normal," the system triggers deployment. According to Jaswinski, the goal is to distinguish between aggressive riding (big jumps, hard landings, sharp movements) and an actual crash — a harder problem than it sounds when you're talking about motocross.
The system deploys in milliseconds, which means protection is already in place when the rider makes contact with the ground or another object.
One of the smartest design decisions Alpinestars made here is integrating the airbag into a chest protector rather than a separate vest. Riders already wear chest protection — this just makes that protection dramatically smarter.
The Tech-Air MX is self-contained: the electronics, sensors, and gas canister are all built in. There's no wiring connecting to the bike, which means it works regardless of whether you get thrown, your bike goes one way and you go another, or you're involved in a multi-rider incident.
Jeff Emig — a two-time AMA Motocross Champion — isn't someone who hypes gear lightly. His first impressions after wearing the system were positive, noting that it felt like riding in a normal chest protector. The added bulk and weight are minimal enough that comfort doesn't seem to be a barrier to adoption.

It's a concrete, real-world demonstration of what this technology is designed to do.
The Tech-Air MX includes an LED panel that communicates the system's status — whether it's armed, has deployed, or needs attention. It's a simple but important feature that lets riders quickly confirm the system is ready before they head out.
On durability: the system is designed to be reset and reused after a deployment. Jaswinski addresses how the canister and components hold up over time and what the process looks like for getting back on the bike after a crash that triggers the airbag.
Airbag protection has been mandatory in MotoGP for years and is increasingly standard in World Supercross and international motocross competition. The Tech-Air MX brings that same category of protection to a broader range of riders.
It won't be for everyone right now — cost and familiarity are real factors. But as the technology becomes more mainstream and the price comes down, it's hard to argue against the premise: smarter protection that activates before impact is better than passive protection that just absorbs it.
Jeff Emig's take after testing it? The system works, and the days of riding with only foam and plastic between you and the ground may be numbered.
